Lu, Bo-shen

Lu has a BA in Literature at University of Glasgow, Scotland and a MA in Theatre at Royal Holloway, University of London, where he worked on his PhD degree. He is now the full-time lecturer teaching Seminar on Directing at the Department of Drama and Theater, National Taiwan University. He was also the former lecturer at Department of Theatre Arts, National Sun Yat-Sen University. Since he took up the position of artistic director in Tainaner Ensemble in 2003, Lu endeavors to give impetus on experimental theatrical works in cross-cultural context and foster young playwrights in Taiwan by engaging in their works. Projects such as Performing Western Canons in Taiwanese, Shakespeare Unplugged and Tainaner Searching for Playwrights are held under the circumstance. Lu¡¦s works are widely celebrated by experts on theatrical studies, media and audiences. His recent works are often on commission with National Chiang Kai-shek Cultural Center and have earned projects funds from National Culture and Arts Foundation. End Game was invited by Centre Culturel de Taïwan À Paris for performance after its debut in 2004. Macbeth represented Taiwan to perform in Corps Sonore Avignon Off in 2007 and won the Performance Arts Award in Taishin Arts Award in the same year. Lu incorporates his works with diverse theatrical and literary classics dating from Greek period to contemporary Taiwan. Plays adapting western works include Greek comedy and tragedy( Lysistrata and Antigone respectively), Shakespeare¡¦s Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet (the Shakespeare Unplugged series) and Samuel Beckett¡¦s Endgame, Footfalls and Come and Go. Productions appropriating from Taiwanese works include White Snake, the youth version (originally written and performed by Tian Chi-yuan, White Snake), Life of Love (Xu Zheng-ping), Castrated Chicken (adapting a modern drama during Japanese colonization, originally a novel of ZhangWen-huan). He also applies performance genre, Henan Opera, to stage Granny Liu (a notable character in The Dream of the Red Chamber). Besides directing and teaching, Lu collaborates with Lan Jian-hong and publish the first theatrical journal, Theatre Matters (six issues since). He also starts Summer School for Actors since 2003, inviting well-known experts and performers to host workshops to advance proficiency of performance in Taiwan.
