abstractSynopsis:
Adapting Aristophanes’s comedy, Lysistrata, Tainaner Ensemble stages a local but intercultural collage to address a timeless issue: sexual relation. Lysistrata uses sexual strike as a means to end the war between Athens and Sparta. However, this strategy inflames the battle between two sexes. The playwright appropriates commedia dell’arte (comedy of art) to dramatize and highlight the regionalism through stage design, language and relevant visual representation. Set in Eternal Golden Castle (Yizai Jincheng, Tainan), pronounced in Taiwanese, the stage is colored with representative elements (betel-nut stall on stage actors performing pole dancing) of Taiwanese culture.
