abstractSynopsis:
Tainaner Ensemble adapts Tian, Chi-yuan’s representative performance, The White Snake, to stage the conflicts between love and desire in the face of morality and ethics. The White Snake bases its story on the Chinese legend, The Legend of the White Snake. Tian’s version is a profound production of musicality (appropriating Peking opera and poetry). To present multi-layered musicality and imagery, Tainaner Ensemble’s version instills Tian’s production with various music and performance genres (gezai opera, popular songs, and atonal music) (e.g., using shovel, sea-saw). An actor plays Xu Xian while three actresses play the white snake demon, the green snake demon (Qing) and Fahai. Six vocalists imitate Greek choir to announcement their observation and critics about the play.
