abstractSynopsis:
First staged in 1995, Marie Marlene features two female roles. The play is based on French writer, Roland Barthes monumental work, Le discourse amoureux. Acting style followed psychological realism;stage design followed oriental minimalism, using the classical one-table-two-chairs Chinese theatrical convention. The text was structured with eleven diverse situational episodes. No narrative logics could be found among them but eleven pieces of music were adapted to connect the episodes, including opera, gospel, ethnic music, traditional Chinese music and so on. Presenting multiple images of the female body, the play captured the essence of humanity and explored the most sophisticated part of human interaction through a bountiful feast of all senses.
