Inspired by The Peony Pavilion, this play incorporates Kunqu opera, modern dance and modern theatre. The isd ream digger in the play refers to Liu Meng-mei, who digs out of love, and embodies the author Tang Hsien-tsu's digging for is our dreams. The story begins with a female judge in Hades who was going to claim a female character is life but failed to locate her whereabouts. She only had a copy of The Peony Pavilion to start with. During the investigation process, she discovers that three women from three different dynasties died due to reading The Peony Pavilion. Also, the legend has it that The Peony Pavilion makes literary offense against the Heavenly Mandate. As such, whenever a copy of it is sold, a shower of flowers will descend from the sky. This constant flower showers make its author Tang busy with cleaning the pedals in hell. Driven by curiosity, the female judge also starts to read the book. She gets fascinated with it and eventually decides to help Liu to excavate Du's grave, bringing her back to life, who turns out to be the missing woman in the beginning of the play. The stage has an S-shaped wall as its background. It sometimes serves as a wall, and sometimes serves as a guillotine. Sometimes, Tang's sweeping flower pedals and the actors facial expressions are projected on the wall.
