abstractSynopsis:
The play describes a woman’s identity quest in the form of Taiwanese opera. A sixteen-year-old girl, Shu-zhen, hides herself in bed because of her father’s strict disciplines. Shu-zhen keeps talking to herself, which leads to the spawning of three fictional females (a naughty clown, a cavalier, and a stylist modern woman) out of her imagination. Representing different aspects of her innermost desire, the trio takes turns visiting Shu-zhen’s parents to discuss about their pedagogical skills. The mother’s yearning for freedom is gradually aroused in the course of conversation. At the end of the play, all female actors line up and sing Be Myself. Wood boards and bamboo curtain compose three sceneries, which serve as the background on stage. Light changes separate different performing space and create mirror-reflection effects for the bamboo curtain. Traditional tunes in Taiwanese opera such as Qizi and Douma are appropriated in music arrangement along with jazz and rock.
