abstractSynopsis:
A work of German Romanticism, this play reflects upon the antagonism between personal will and power. Though Prince Frederick van Homburg led an army and defeated the Switzerland force, he was still condemned to death owing to his rebel against martial order. His lover constantly petitioned pardon from the officers and eventually won Homburg amnesty. Yet, Homburg had been determined to die. The stage thrust into the audience and separated the king in power from other characters. It replaced the prison by a boxing stage, the road by a slide, filling the theatre with all kinds of visual metaphors. When the scene changed, the actors could explain the plot directly to the audience, bringing a touch of metadrama to the play. "
