abstractSynopsis:
This play is based on two British playwrights' new works in 2000: Harold Pinter's Far Away, and Carl Churchill's Memorial Day.These two plays are distinctly different. The former is an absurdist comedy written by a male playwright, while the latter is a lyrical tragedy written by a female. Hung Hung thinks Pinter's work is a funny comedy about individual's living condition, while Churchill's a sad tragedy about the fate of the whole human race. These two plays, distinctively different, are both playwrights' last work in the 20th century. The play tells the three stages of a girl's growing up. Through the change of her relationship with her auntie and boyfriend, the play reflects the on-going war and political atrocities in the past half century. Its aesthetics is symbolistic and poetic;while its language is sharp and moving. Though a short play, it touches important issue in modern day ;all kinds of discriminations, be it racial, religious, or class-concerned. These rampant discriminations, from the Middle East conflict, 911 attack, Moscow Theatre's abduction, to ethnic argument in Taiwan, are the sources of danger. Hence this play is also called a "modern apocalyptic allegory".
