abstractSynopsis:
This play is the first work of M. O. V. E. Theatre. Inspired by Lu Xun's novella "The Flight to the Moon," this play sets against the background of the legend of Houyi, a hero who shoots down the suns shooting the suns. It portrays the imaginary life of Houyi and Chang O, the wife of Houyi who eventually flies to the moon as an escape. Presenting the couple's life after Houyi's heroic deeds and before Chang O's final escape, the play explores the dark side of a hero, showcasing this legendary couple as an ordinary family who goes through the phase of loss and embarrassment. It further pushes the audience to think about the true definition of a hero. The roles of Houyi and Chang O are enacted by 7 actors, three male and four female. The T-shaped stage, decorated with bench, long table and a treasure chest, creates a materialistic feel. The costumes use the contrasting effect of bright red and yellow to make explicit the divide between masculinity/femininity, Houyi/Chang O, sun/moon. The actors sometimes put on masks that are shaped in the styles of the Sanxingdui excavates, which enhance the mysterious atmosphere of the legend. Percussion and vocals are deployed for special sound effects.
