Inspired by a mythical Goddess¡XHanba, the Goddess of Drought. Legend has it that Hanba, bold and dressed in blue, always causes drought wherever she travels. She was called upon to descend onto the earthly world by the Yellow Emperor to defeat his enemy, Chiyou. After the war, she, nevertheless, was betrayed and exiled to wander around in the world by herself. Despite her superpower, Hanba was not welcomed and befriended by anyone;she can only find her own way to Kunlun by herself in a constant state of being rejected and chased out. The story also depicts apocalyptic themes and creationist myths, implying that life is an ongoing process of death and rebirth. This performance showcases integrated styles of traditional nanguan and beiguan, punctuated with modern electronic music. The actors bodily movements mimic the manipulation of puppets with moments of ritualistic and tap dances. A projection screen is set up on the stage, showing a scrolling Chinese landscape painting as the background. Animations and imageries are also used to divide the acts of performance, creating a poetic effect.
