Based on the traditional text of "Mulian Saves his Mother from the Hell", the play was a contemporary Taiwan version of it. The play was a death ritual in which a Daoist monk chanting mournful recitations and performing ritualistic acts to deliver the spirit of an unidentified dead woman to the world of tranquility. As the ritual went on, participants of all kinds of social backgrounds--religion followers, white collar workers, housewives, university students, and vagrants¡Xsometimes integrated with each other to form a chanting team to enhance ritualistic atmosphere and sometimes stood aside from the team to argue with each other, dueling with words.
