Adapted from British playwright Timberlake Wertenbaker's same name play, the play describes a rehearsal process between a Bulgarian female director, an African American playwright and two British actors. The four of them get into fights and conflicts during this process, disclosing lies they made for survival. The play within this play ;describes Charles Darwin and Captain Robert FitzRoy's clashes. After meeting FitzRoy, Darwin boards ;The Beagle, devoted to collecting specimens and researching fossils around the world. However, while he is developing "the origin of species" and "evolutionary theory," his ongoing debates with the Captain's religious view get intensified. This debate turns their previous harmonious relationship into a confrontation, leading to the suicide of the captain. Through this play-within-the-play device, this play attempts to explore issues of race, ethics, ethnic identities and their intersections with he social theories deriving from the& ;Darwinian theories of "natural selection" and "survival of the fittest".
