Tsai, Ming-liang

Tsai graduated from the Department of TV and Theatre in Chinese Culture University in 1981. During the years in college, he started to write stage plays and for the next decade, he was in the field of television but still kept writing new plays at the same time. He received the Brass Award in Tokyo International Film Festival for his Rebels of the Neon God in 1993, the Golden Lion Award in Venice International Film Festival, Fipresci Prize, and the Best Director in Golden Horse Award for Vive l¡¦Amour in 1994, and he was also granted Silver Bear Award in Berlin International Film Festival and International Media Award, Silver Hugo Award in Chicago International Film Festival, Special Characteristics Award in Sao Paulo International Film Festival and the Best Asian Feature in Singapore International Film Festival for The River in 1997. He finished The Hole in 1998 and won Fipresci Price in Cannes Film Festival, the Golden Hugo Award of Best Film in Chicago International Film Festival, and the Best Asian Director Award as well as the Best Asian Feature in Singapore International Film Festival. In 2002, his directing work What Time Is It There? was awarded Technical Prizes in Sound Engineering (Tu Duu-chih) in Cannes Film Festival, Silver Hugo for Grand Jury Prize, Silver Hugo for Best Director and Silver Hugo for Cinematography in Chicago International Film Festival, Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress in the Asia Pacific Film Festival, and Special Jury Prize for an Individual Award in Golden Horse Award. In 2002, he finished the short film, The Skywalk Is Gone. In 2003, he directed Goodbye, Dragon Inn and at the same time served as miscellaneous crew for Li Kang-sheng¡¦s first directing work. He is now preparing for his next film, Wayward Wind
